Channel Nine Variety WA Bash
20th Anniversary Bash
Western Australia’s special kids have 1.508 million reasons to smile thanks to the 20th Anniversary Variety WA Bash.
$1.508 million. That’s the record breaking amount our heroic Bashers, volunteers and corporate sponsors raised to help Variety help kids in need.
Kicking off from Exmouth on Saturday 16 August, more than 200 Bashers and 60 cars took part in the 3,800km anniversary event, bringing fun and excitement to communities in Port Hedland, Tom Price, Marble Bar, Nullagine, Mt Augustus and more before finishing in Carnarvon on 23 August 2008.
Rock legend Jimmy Barnes even joined the carnival on wheels, headlining a special Bash concert for the Port Hedland community at the local race track. Several Bashers also gave impressive performances at (or rather on) the track, donning hobby horses in the hotly contested Anniversary Cup – with the ‘horse’ auction raising and incredible $20,000 for Variety.
During their travels, the Variety Bashers presented more than $95,000 worth of educational and recreational equipment to individuals and regional community groups to help enrich the lives of children in need – including computers and educational equipment for Exmouth District High School, North Tom Price, East Carnarvon, Port Hedland, Pannawonica and Marble Bar Primary Schools; sport and recreation equipment for Paraburdoo Primary School, Nullagine Remote Community School and Ngurrawaana Community, as well as a Variety Sunshine Coach for children from the Shire of East Pilbara.
After the dust had settled and weary Bashers made their way home from Carnarvon, the Bash came to an official close with 20th Anniversary Bash Ball at Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.
With an astounding 31 Bash crews succeeding in their challenge to raise $20,000 for the 20th Anniversary, the Top Ten and Highest Fundraiser awards held even greater significance this year, with honours going to:

Work has already commenced on the 2008 Bash project – a $660,000 play ground at Saw Avenue, Kings Park. The play ground and surrounding facilities will create an inclusive and accessible family area for all children to enjoy, including those with physical or sensory disability. We look forward to following the progress of this project over the coming months, culminating in the official opening planned for early 2009.
Heartfelt thanks to our Bashers, support crew, officials and sponsors who worked so tirelessly to make the 2008 Variety WA 20th Anniversary Bash the record success it was. We couldn’t do it without you.
Special thanks also to Channel Nine, Brookes Transport, Big Brews, Watershed Premium Wines, Staging Connections and all our sponsors for their continued and outstanding support.
Plans are already under way for the 2009 Variety WA Bash, involving a national event in Alice Springs on 22 August 2009. More details will be revealed at the 2009 Bash Launch in November. |
